Residents who live along Highridge Drive, down Summitridge Drive and on San Ysidro Drive to Stan Place were ordered to leave, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department alert.
An evacuation warning was issued for residents on San Circle and down San Ysidro Drive to Peavine Drive.
By 5:30 p.m., the Portola fire had burned up to 40 acres — up from 32 acres almost two hours earlier — and was 10% contained. Officials said it was moving toward homes on two flanks and had the potential to grow to about 60 acres. Hundreds of firefighters swarmed the area, crowding the narrow, winding streets with equipment.
